The Bemidji Pioneer is a daily newspaper serving the Bemidji area since 1896, including the counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard and Cass in north-central Minnesota. The Bemidji Pioneer reaches 9,800 homes Tuesday through Saturday and 11,000 homes on Sunday. The Advertiser, a twice-weekly shopper, reaches another 8,000 homes on Wednesday and 11,000 homes on Sunday. The Bemidji Pioneer prides itself on local news coverage and stunning photography. It won General Excellence and Best Editorial Page awards from the Minnesota Newspaper Association in 2001. The Bemidji Pioneer employs more than 60 people. The Bemidji area is widely known as a tourist destination because of its natural beauty and recreational facilities. It is a regional hub for shopping and medical facilities. Bemidji also boasts strong public and private school systems and is home to Bemidji State University, Northwest Technical College and Oak Hills Bible College.

The Blackduck American celebrates its 100th birthday in 2001. The weekly newspaper serves Blackduck and its surrounding area, reaching about 1,200 homes every Sunday. The companion Blackduck Shopper reaches another 3,300 homes. Blackduck is in the heart of north-central Minnesota resort country. It's also a haven for outdoors enthusiasts, home to some of the best waterfowl and deer hunting in America. The city of Blackduck turned 100 years old in the summer of 2001, and its hometown newspaper has been there since the beginning.
