WDAZ-TV 8, located in Grand Forks, ND and offices in Devils Lake, ND, began broadcasting in 1967 covering the northern end of the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota adding Canadian coverage into Winnipeg with the inception of cable. WDAZ-TV 8 is the only television station bringing local news to this area, produced strictly for this region. WDAZ-TV 8 operates, with a complete news and sports staff, producing 18 live newscasts each week. The exclusive coverage WDAZ-TV 8 provides was brought to national attention during the spring flood in 1997 when the staff lived at the station, as their homes were flooded. They kept WDAZ-TV 8 on the air continuously during the crisis, earning the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for journalistic excellence.
WDAZ follows the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux nationally ranked hockey team and men's and women's basketball teams, producing games for regional coverage through the Fighting Sioux Sports Network. The coaches' shows for UND football and basketball are produced during the season weekly and televised on WDAZ-TV, WDAY-TV, KBMY-TV AND KMCY-TV. The communities of Devils Lake, Grand Forks and others in the northern Red River Valley and northwest Minnesota offer WDAZ the opportunity to cover local news and sporting events unique to the region. WDAZ-TV 8 employs a full and part time staff of forty.
Grand Forks is home to the University of North Dakota, the only state University with a law school and medical school as well as a Center for Aerospace Sciences.
