Until March of 2003, the Farmington Rosemount Independent Town Pages was two newspapers produced by a single staff to serve, respectively, the cities of Farmington and Rosemount. The two cities are separated by about eight miles along Highway 3 in southern Dakota County. Today, the Independent Town Pages combines the hyperlocal focus of each publication into one weekly newspaper that covers both cities. We still cover the same local news, sports and features. We just package it a little differently.
Farmington and Rosemount offer several recreational activities, including public hunting land and good fishing in the Vermillion River, a rare trophy trout stream located near a major metropolitan area. Each city holds an annual community celebration in the summer. Farmington’s Dew Days, which according to legend takes its name from the fact Farmington residents once drank more Mountain Dew per capita than any city in the country, takes place in June. Rosemount’s Leprechaun Days, a tribute to the city’s Irish heritage, is the last full week in July.
Dakota County is in the process of developing a regional park on thousands of acres of open land in Empire Township, which is between Farmington and Rosemount.
The five-person staff of the Independent Town Pages also produces several special sections throughout the year. We have a community guide that comes out at the beginning of the year, special graduation sections for Farmington and Rosemount high schools and preview sections for the fall, winter and spring high school sports seasons.
Our work has won dozens of awards from the Minnesota and National newspaper associations, including recognitions for general excellence, reporting, sports coverage, design and photography. Staff members have also won individual awards.
The Independent Town Pages is one of two newspapers that focuses on Farmington and Rosemount and the only one that readers pay to receive. That readers are willing to subscribe when there is another free option in the area is a testament to the work we do to provide the best local coverage around.
