Echo Publishing began in 1972 with a local ownership group as Echo Publishing featuring the Country Echo weekly newspaper based in Pequot Lakes. The business was eventually sold to the Keith Anderson family, and the newspaper name switched to the Lake Country Echo. Echo Publishing purchased the nearby Pine River Journal in 1988, and continued to separately publish the two weekly newspapers.
Keith Anderson’s son, Peter, took over ownership of Echo Publishing in the mid-1990s, and he sold the company to Morris Communications in 1999. The Lake Country Echo and the Pine River Journal were combined as the Pineandlakes Echo Journal newspaper in September of 2013. Echo Publishing was sold to Forum Communications Company in January of 2014.
